Probiotic Formula

The GOOD bacteria

Probiotics - Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are considered “good bacteria”. L. acidophilus and other Lactobacillus species, including L. bulgaricus, L. catnaforme, and L. fermentum normally inhabit vaginal and gastrointestinal tracts. These “Good Bacteria” help with the digestion, absorption, and production of certain nutrients. There are over 400 species of bacteria and yeast which inhabit the intestinal tract. These “Good Bacteria” help keep potentially harmful bacteria and yeast in check. Probiotics should be used while taking antibiotics (don’t take at same time). I recommend patients with yeast overgrowth stay on probiotics for a period of three months. Some extremely resistant yeast infections may need continuous probiotic replacement therapy. Acidophilus has proven to be effective in treating irritable bowel syndrome, H. pylori, diarrhea, and colitis. It’s especially helpful in treating yeast overgrowth. Yogurt contains certain strains of good bacteria. However yogurt isn’t standardized for a particular amount of bacteria. There may be 1 billion or none at all. Most yogurts are made from L. bulgaricus or Streptococcus thermophilus, both are friendly bacteria but neither will help colonize the colon. Supplementing with live L. acidophilus and B. bifidum powders or capsules is preferred. It is best to use live organisms that are shipped on ice and then kept refrigerated until purchase.

The dosage for probiotics is from 1-20 billion organisms a day. The higher doses are used when taking or just after taking antibiotics. Generally when using for yeast over growth I recommend 5-10 billion organisms a day for a period of 2-3 months.
