Licorice root extract (Glycyrrhiza glabra) – has been used for over 5,000 years and is one of China’s most popular herbal medicines. Licorice root extract acts like the adrenal hormone Aldosterone, which is involved in salt and water metabolism. Large amounts of licorice root can cause water retention, potassium deficiency and elevated blood pressure. However, most individuals with adrenal insufficiency have low blood pressure (positive Ragland’s sign), increased potassium and low blood volume. Raising the blood pressure can have dramatic effects on those suffering from hypoadrenia. Many times their nausea, dizziness and fatigue will simply disappear.
Typically, the dose generally needed to cause side effects is 10-14 grams of crude plant extract. Theoretically, some sensitive individuals may have adverse reactions from as little1-2 grams. However, some individuals have been known to take as much as 30 grams a day before side effects occurred.
Glycyrrhiza appears to have a modest glucocorticoid activity and might act to increase cortisol levels. Glycyrrhizin, another componenet of Licorice, is structurally similar to cortisol. It weakly mimicks the role of natural steroid hormones, and can spare cortisol, essentially extending its half-life by suppressing 5-beta reductase activity. Components of Glycyrrhiza can also counteract some of the adverse immunosuppressant effects of excessive levels of glucocorticoid. The side effects often subside with a reduction dose. Using deglycerides, Glycyrrhiza can often prevent these potential side effects.
Those with low adrenal function need to reverse the elevated potassium to sodium ratio. If the blood pressure becomes elevated or a the patient starts to retain unwanted water (edema), simply reducing or eliminating the extract corrects the problem. My patients are usually taking the CFS/FMS Formula, which contains potassium. A trial of licorice root with or without adrenal glandulars may be needed for those patients who are suffering from extremely low blood pressure.
Don’t take over 900mgs of Licorice root a day. If adverse symptoms should arise, simply discontinue the use of Licorice root.
Suggested Usage: Adults take 1 capsule twice daily between meals or as directed by physician.
